Exploring the multimediality of urban space, how it influences public and private experience, and what role the graphic/media designer can play within this domain
Tanja, Ece and Roland have created a blog both informing about, and documenting their project for the Hacking the City assignment. It’s called Straatjes met Plaatjes (Streets with Pictures) and can be checked out here: http://straatjesmetplaatjes.tumblr.com/
Their project is also a reaction to the culturele kaalslag that is currently plaguing the Netherlands.
A project by artist and designer Christian Nold mapping the experience of local residents as they move through the environment of their city:
Greenwich Emotion Map by Christian Nold – Oct 2005 – March 06
The project involved weekly workshops with 80 local Greenwich Peninsula residents with the aim of re-exploring the area afresh with the help of a Bio Mapping device. The device invented by the artist measures the wearer’s Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), which is an indicator of emotional arousal in conjunction with the wearer’s geographical location. The resulting ‘Emotion Maps’ encourage personal reflection on the complex relationship between oneself, the environment and ones fellow citizens. In a group, people then commented about their experiences and left annotations on the map.
Read more about the project, which also was done in other cities including Paris and download the maps at www.emotionmap.net
Here’s a videoclip (advertisement) where São Paulo forms the backdrop. If you’re aware of the fact that billboards etc. have been banned, then you can really see how the cityscape is relatively void of graphic messages:
(…) Identify a problem or negative experience you face in the public environment (maybe something that often irritates you) and use your design skills to propose a solution or improvement for that experience. You can think for instance of a temporary intervention in the public space, or designing new rules or regulations, or maybe adding/removing elements from the public space. (…)

A new city law in Sao Paulo, Brazil, went into effect on January 1st 2007:
practically all outdoor advertising was banned: billboards, neon signs, electronic displays, ads on the sides of buses and taxis, even distribution of flyers.
All because they were considered to contribute to visual pollution of public space.

My name is Rogerio and as you already know I’ll be your guest teacher for a few weeks while Gabriëlle is in China on a field trip.
I’ll be there this Tuesday to introduce you to the Sensory Mapping assignment.
It will be short – just 3 classes – but we will make it very intense and inspiring.
Please download the assignment PDF using the link below and bring it with you on the first day.
If you have any previous work (or nice design examples) that might relate to information design or mapping, feel free to bring it along. I will do the same.
