A.s zaterdag (14 april) tijdens Motel Mozaique is er een semacode tour door de stad. Deze tour is ontwikkeld door studenten van de Willem de Kooning Academie i.s.m Holland-Interactive.
Daarnaast geeft Oli4 Otten om 16.00 op Perron Mozaique (bij station Hofplein) een presentatie over de semacodes, hierbij word ook het werk van de studenten getoond.

Er zijn nog plaatsen vrij voor de tour, dus schrijf je snel in!!

Semacode tour
3e jaars studenten grafisch ontwerpen van de Willem de Kooning Academie hebben i.s.m Holland-Interactive voor Motel Mozaique een semacode route ontwikkeld door de stad met als thema “de stad als multimediale interface” Met deze plattegrond in de hand kun je op verschillende lokaties de semacodes vinden en via jouw mobiele telefoon het werk van de studenten bekijken. Hun semacodes bieden toegang tot een aantal onzichtbare lagen van de stad Rotterdam. Het historisch verleden van de stad komt weer tot leven of een absurdistische knipoog naar bekende ikonen van de stad zijn een paar van de verrassende blikvangers die je op deze semacode route kan tegenkomen.

Every time DEAF takes place I find myself in an ambivalent state of mind: on the one hand I’m curious to see the installations, and hope to be inspired, to be provoked into thinking about new ways of approaching media and the tools that I, as a designer, use or create. On the other hand I’m nearly always disappointed. Disappointed that often many of the works at the exhibition are broken down or switched off. Annoyed at the language used in the festival flyers, site and brochures, a language that is bloated, hermetic and exclusive. I marvel at the recurring ugliness* of the graphic design (except of course in the year that I was allowed to design the printed matter for DEAF03 )

Yet every time I decide to visit the festival anyway, despite my reservations. Because it is a unique opportunity to see, and above all, experience different interactive, media installations and works “in the flesh” rather than through documentation online. And there are always one or two works that make a lasting impact.

Soooo….I want you all to go and see it for yourselves! And maybe, just maybe, your experience will be completely different to mine.

* ugliness being a matter of personal taste of course.

THE ASSIGNMENT
The following assignment is related to the DEAF07 festival.
Download the brochure of the festival which you can find as a PDF on the DEAF07 site here. (You need Acrobat Reader 7.0 to open this PDF)
Read the introduction Interact or Die!. on page 2 -3.

Organise yourselves into groups of 3 or 4.
Each group must design their version of the Interact or Die! brochure using the introduction as a starting point.
You must re-use ALL the text. (Except the advertisments)
You’re free to choose whether you do it in English, Dutch or both.
If you want to use images, you can harvest these from the internet, or make them yourselves.
You can also decide to limit yourselves to a purely textual solution.

The challenge is to design a brochure about this exhibition on interaction, using the 2-dimensional medium of print. Keep the Interact or die! introduction in mind when you are designing the layout and stucture of your brochure.

FORMAT
The only restriction is that it has to be in print.
Size, whether it is a booklet, folder, poster etc. is up to you.

AIM
The aim of your redesign is to communicate a personal and critical view on the festival. It can be a very subjective interpretation. Either on the exhibited work or on the way the festival communicates. It does NOT have to be practical.
At the same time, by studying the official brochure, and visiting the festival you have a thorough introduction to the DEAF festival.

Download and study the DEAF07 Interact or Die! brochure.
Read the introduction op page 2-3.
11 April > visit exhibition (independently) to experience the works and the atmosphere and scout the exhibition for imput for your design
18 April > work on the brochure during class, opportunity to show and discuss
25 April > final presentations

Developments in the field of information technologies have contributed to the fact that science fiction no longer is fiction.

As a graphic designer working with and for digital media I have always been interested in the possiblities of connecting print media with digital media.
Or, to put it more generally, in which ways the digital can connect with the physical in a meaningful way.

In cities like New York, London and Tokyo you can find more and more examples of online/digital media that enter in this union with the offline world: billbards that react when you wave at them, car commercials that beam a personal message to you as you drive by, and then off course there are the many screens that populate places like Times Square.

Your mobile phone has become a reciever that, through the ubiquity of wireless technologies has become a receptacle for diverse media, films, music, customized information etc. All over the cities there are invisible "beacons" that "push" all kinds of data to your wireless gadget.

Luckily we still have a choice whether we want to recieve all this stuff. Marketing agencies are anxious to make use of these possiblities. They have the budgets to do so.

A concrete example of a more accessible application was a series of posters for a festival in Rotterdam. By adding semacodewhich works a bit like a barcode. You could download a digital file using your cameraphone. For instance a link to a track from one of the performing artists. Shotcodes work in a similar fashion.

The coming weeks you will think about possible scenarios of interaction between online media and the physical world in public space.

lesson 1:
Introduction theme.
Assignment for the coming week: check out your own current urban environment in the light of the above mentioned theme. Take photos, write notes on what kind of connections and media you see. Gather all your findings in an html page or a PDF document.

lesson 2:
Make your own semacodes :
Semacode workshop by guest tutor Olivier Otten van Holland-Interactive.nl
He will present a few projects done by Holland-Interactive, and then proceed to give a step-by-step introduction to semacodes, how to generate them and how they can be used. At the end of this lesson you will all get the assignment to come up with a plan for a combination of your semacode and its digital component, and proceed to implement it somewhere in the city. More details on this will follow during this lesson.
